DEAD MAN’S FINGERS BLUE RASPBERRY MOJITO

Dead Man’s Fingers is a very nice rum, as we have already discussed.

And as I was shopping for beverages to pair up with the the Retro TVC Cantina Adventure Set Aliens, I saw their ready-mixed Blue Raspberry Mojito tinned cocktail in its vibrant blue can with colourful text and red-eyed skull. And, after the Au Vodka Alcopops debacle, I felt a little wary of trying another blue-raspberry drink so soon afterward. But, empirical science marches onward, and experiments must be carried out! It’s another 5% ABV offering, and it mentions no ingredients at all on the tin. You get told to “Enjoy this Dead Man’s Fingers Blue Raspberry Mojito cocktail for a taste of the unusual.” That’s it.

But enjoy it, I did! Colour-wise, the beverage itself is a closer match for Cantina Adventure Set Hammerhead’s tunic, but I needed to do something with Blue Snag, and the red-eyed skull on the can looks somewhat similar to Bue Snag’s own weird face. Flavour-wise, it’s sweet. And I know I said that in the Depserados review, where it came across as a negative. But in this case, Dead Man’s Fingers pushed the sweetness all the way to 11, thereby upsetting the power balance and saving the flavour of the beverage as a whole. You get barely any rum flavour, but you definitely get sugar, and you get the lime tinge you’d expect from a mojito, and the blue raspberry just blasts you in the face with berry juiciness. It tastes like those big, really bougie upmarket fruit gummies that are moulded in the shapes and colours of the fruits they represent and look like they’re made out of shiny translucent plastic, but are soft and juicy and packed with real fruit juices. Did I mention the juiciness? Considering the unnaturally vibrant colour of the drink, I’m also kind of worried what ingredients they’re not telling us about, but unlike the Au Vodka Alcopops, this beverage doesn’t feel or taste like I’m subjecting my alimentary canal to a chemical attack that contravenes The Geneva Convention. If there are any artificial sweeteners in this drink, I can’t even detect them; they are expertly concealed by the tartness of the fruit flavours and the tinge of rum.

The Retro TVC Blue Snaggletooth is . . . well, his colour scheme is fairly accurate, at least. His feet are moulded in a silvery plastic, so there won’t be any paint rubbing off his toes, as with the original Blue Snag, which is a thoughtful touch. His cardback looks very nice indeed, with a PhotoShopped, colour-adjusted 1979 image of Zutmore from The Star Wars Holiday Special. And there’s where my compliments run out. The figure is just a palette-swapped version of the 2012 “Villains Set” 3-Pack Snaggletooth. He’s short, hunchbacked, and doesn’t even have the famous belt buckle – probably because The Black Falcon, of Super7’s The Worst, stole it off him:

What I would’ve loved to have seen with a TVC Blue Snaggletooth is an all-new mould replicating the look of the 1979 original, just more detailed and super-articulated. And then, they could have sold that on a different cardback as a mass-market release as Morlimur Snugg, the recurring Blue Snaggletooth from The Clone Wars and Rebels, who was based on the 1979 toy, to begin with. But that’s not all! They could also simultaneously tool up some shorter legs with bare feet, remould him in dark red with grey skin, and BAM! Short Red Snaggletooth. But that’s still not all! Tool up a proper Zutmore from The Star Wars Holiday Special, and all you’d need to do is put an Ugnaught head on another run with less paint, and you’ve got a Yoxgit to put on your sail barge!

There are more money-making and money-saving options, here, if you invest just a little bit more in some smart tooling, with a dash of foresight.

Drink this if you also like: Mojitos, sweet margaritas, alcopops, hyper-sweet cocktails, bougie fruit gummies.
