Action Figures & Their Beers -- Head for the Huey

Believe it or fart up a rope, I didn't actually plan for this review to land so close to the premiere of Predator: Badlands, it just sort of happened serendipitously.

Anywho, what kind of middle-aged sci-fi fan are you if I have to explain this one? This is another excellent NECA figure from their Fox Sci-Fi Movie Monster lines, showing Arnie portraying Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer on “Jungle Patrol,” from the 1987 movie Predator. The figure is highly detailed with a good likeness of The Governator, very nicely painted, decently articulated, and comes with some good, character-appropriate accessories from the film. I somehow made it to my Late 30s without having an action figure based on Arnold Schwarzenegger in my collection, so I had to rectify that, and this is a pretty darned good one.

Well, that’s the figure discussed, so let’s GET TO DA CHOPPA!!!

Bay’s Brewery Chopper Golden Ale is a 4.7% ABV little fundraiser (5% of the proceeds of each bottle sold) to help support the Devon Air Ambulance, one of several local charity-boosting brews this brewery is producing. “Reach for the skies with Chopper Ale, a gorgeous golden ale that is distinctly British in its character with its unique blend of UK hops,” reads the label. And I have to say, every time I see a beer description that makes a big deal about the hops and no other ingredients, I roll my eyes and die a little more inside.

And again, it’s another horrible sandpapery label, so I’m drinking this one out of a glass. But the beer . . . I really like it! They make a big deal about the hops blend, but they completely fail to mention the smooth mellowness of the ale. It’s not heavy on the malt, but you can taste it. And then the hops just sort of pop their heads around the corner, say “Hi,” and slowly fade away. It’s very refreshing, and I bet it would make an excellent shandy. I’m going to have to test that theory, if I ever find any more. [Beedo’s Aside: It’s been about five months and no luck; I don’t think I’m going to find any more, this year.] Yeah, I think this just might be my favourite beer from Bays Brewery!

Drink this if you also like: Mellow ales, golden ales, shandies, lagers.
