LucasFilm
Licensing Sheet Sale
What are these licensing sheets? They are
internally-produced LucasFilm paperwork that would be distributed
to all the licensees who worked on products for the movies. LucasFilm
would send out a packet of sheets that licensees could refer to
when creating officially licensed products. What we have here
are a few of those sheets that somehow survived after the licensees
were through with them. If some of these images look familiar
- THEY ARE! Many licensees used this exact artwork in their products.
A bit of history about these specific sheets.
The seller we got these from was liquidating a collection he purchased.
I could not get in touch with the original owner because the seller
wouldn't divulge who it was. But looking at the items themselves,
we can draw several conclusions. The sheets come from at least
3 separate lots. There is a set from ESB that are on 7.5x11 sheets.
Then there are two different styles of ROTJ sheets, clearly produced
at different times. One can conclude that the original owner put
together this set from several sources. 38 of the sheets are printed
on high-gloss paper (due to the type of paper, these sheets are
often called "licensing slicks"). They're not photocopies
or reproductions... they're high-quality printed originals, similar
to pages from a text book. Those 38 are really nice.
Two, however, are on a different material.
They're not on glossy stock; they're on photo paper. I work for
a newspaper, so I'm very familiar with this medium. That these
two sheets are on photo paper leads me to believe that these are
internal LucasFilm documents. You generally use photo paper to
generate copies for proofing... the medium is far too expensive
to mass-produce and distribute it. In fact, one of the photo paper
sheets has hand-drawn inking on it which is just so damn cool.
The other is cut to a non-standard size... just about 8.5x12.
These two are among the nicest pieces in the set.
Please refer to the photos below to see
the gorgeous artwork featured on these licensing slicks. All of
the images have been altered with a watermark to prevent piracy.
We can E-mail individual high-rez scans at your request.
We're accepting offers on the first two
slicks - Boba Fett and Darth Vader. We will hear offers until
3/1/02, at which point we will either sell to the best offer,
move to sell them in another marketplace (eBay), or keep them
in our own personal collections. It all depends on the quality
of the offers we receive. We also will accept trade offers for
any of the slicks for vintage carded figures, vintage
Vader items and POTF coins (Ed
Lee), and vintage C-3PO items (Bill
Cable).
Shipping will be $4 per order to the owner
you purchase from. If you purchase slicks from both owners, postage
will be $4 to each.
Slicks marked "PENDING" have
offers on them, but we have not yet received the cash. If you're
interested in any of them, please E-mail us and we'll let you
know if the pending deal falls through.

Description: |
This is the premier
piece of our find - an Empire Strikes Back Boba Fett licensing
sheet. Copyright 1981, on 7 1/2" x 11" high-gloss paper
stock. This slick features an impressive list of the original
Pantone color codes used to make sure the deco on all the vintage
licensed items was correct. And where else would you see that
Fett is supposed to come with a "camel finder?" This
image was used on several odd-ball items: erasers, puffy stickers,
placemats, metallic impression cards from CUI Inc., ROTJ mugs
from England, and the POTF coin image of Fett is a dead ringer
for this slick. It's difficult to speculate just how many of
examples of this Fett slicks still survive today, but it's very
telling that this is the first example than anyone I know has
ever seen. You can count the number of ESB licensees and say
that's the number that were produced, but to guess at how many
weren't destroyed or discarded is impossible. For all we know,
this is the only one still around today. Don't miss out on this
amazing, rare Fett collectable. |

You've seen this
Vader artwork EVERYWHERE. And this is one of the few original
licensing sheets LucasFilm sent out that was used to put this
image on all those items, including pillows, Topps Gum cards,
wallets, lamp shades, packaging, umbrellas, suncatchers, cookies,
frisbees, french mustard glass containers, Stride Rite boots,
aprons, T-shirts, and hats. This is one of the most recognized
images from the original Trilogy, and the slick that may have
generated many of those images would be the centerpiece of any
collection. |

Description: |
This is one of
the very few (perhaps only) licensed vintage images of Slave
Leia. Back in the day, not many licensees felt comfortable using
the image of Leia in her metal bikini on their products... with
it being so damn sexy, and the products being marketed at 9-year-olds.
So it's tough to find any vintage memorabilia with Slave Leia
on it. One of the only examples of this being used that we could
discover was on Burtons Cookies. But we assume that all the licensees
were provided with an image to use if they wanted it. The art
on this one is just jaw-dropping. This might be the only place
you get to see it. |

This Leia Boussh
is on photo paper, not printed on high-gloss stock. The primary
use for this medium is internal proofing. It is much to expensive
to be mass-produced. We have no other corroborating evidence
to prove it's internal, but it's the only logical conclusion
we can derive. It is also cut to a non-standard size. It's about
an inch longer than normal. Also, half of the copyright information
was shorn off when it was cut. |

to prove it's internal, but it's the only logical conclusion

If you hold the paper at an angle, you can see the marker reflections
from the light... that sort of red/purple hue you get from those
fat permanent "Marks-A-Lot" markers. The marker marks
are all within the star field around the ship. Was it someone
editing the image before final approval? Was it some bored LFL
employee doodling? We don't know, but either way it's awesome! |

hand-made corrections on it. Basically someone at LucasFilm applied
a label over the name plate to change the name of this character.
This Ewok wasn't always called Paploo. His original name was
Kieeco! Kieeco is printed on the glossy stock, with a white label
overtop the name. The label has the name "Paploo" typed
on it by a type writer. You can only see "Kieeco" by
holding the slick up to the light. This is a very interesting
and historical piece! |
