INNIS & GUNN RUM FINISH

The Innis & Gunn / Megatron miniseries continues with their delectable Rum Finish brew. This “Full-bodied Scottish beer bursting with fruit and spicy notes” is “matured over the finest rum-infused American Oak heartwood, resulting in a beer with a delicious warming character that is bursting with fruit and lively spiciness.” That’s a lot of bursting on one label. I have to admit, though, it’s a heck of a flavour explosion. If Megatron’s fusion cannon shot beer instead of supercharged plasma, this is probably what it would taste like.

Rum, besides being an alcoholic drink, can also be used as an adjective meaning “dodgy, suspect, questionable, odd, or peculiar.” Which can also describe a toy gun TransFormer which, thanks to being produced in Japan, does not have a legally-mandated neon colour scheme and blaze-orange barrel. Therefore, dodgy paint scheme = rum finish. Which is a very roundabout way of mentioning the Japanese version of Classics (Henkei) Megatron. But since I don’t wander about town waving this guy around menacingly and threatening to shoot extremist animal rights activists, abusive vegans, and anti-monarchists (but a guy can dream), and keep him in robot mode on the bottom of a storage crate on the bottom of a pile of storage crates in a crate-filled room not unlike the one at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark (but with infinitely more little plastic aliens, robots, spaceships, and dinosaurs), there is no legal problem.

I don’t honestly get much fruity component to the flavour, though. It is a bit spicy and liquor-y, but I also get a very slight tinge of vanilla, which seems to be Innis & Gunn’s signature. The label says this beer would go perfectly with game such as venison or duck, or mature cheeses served with chutneys and relishes. It’s certainly strong enough to hold its own against (and also work well with) those tastes, so, yeah: give it a go if you want a really rich, satisfying autumn / winter meal.
