KELTEK KING

Following up on last week’s Sandringham Diamond Ale, I found another beer late last summer that continues and complements the royal theme. So as last week’s beer got paired with Queen Marlena of MOTU Classics, this week’s sample from Keltek Brewery – simply named King – gets teamed up with her husband, King Randor. (When I took this photo last year, the “Eternos Palace” King Randor hadn't been released yet, so I had to go with “Battle Armour” King Randor. But, happily, his cape goes well with the label.)

The Keltek Brewery of Redruth, Cornwall, offers this “worthy winner of the National Brewing Competition,” its premium, hand-brewed pale ale. Interestingly, the back of the label only lists “Water, Malt, Hops & Yeast,” without being any more specific than that. At 5.1% ABV, it’s a high-average-strength, slightly cloudy beer that tastes familiar. After some consideration, what it tastes like is The Governor with a tinge of Brakspear Triple mixed in. Both are excellent beers I’ve given good reviews, so King, tasting like a cross between two great beers, is also going to get a good review.

Like The Governor, it’s got a hearty, rich, toasty component as the main flavour, but with a faint liquory tinge that is very reminiscent of Brakspear Triple. It’s mellow yet rich, and satisfying without being too heavy. It’s very lightly carbonated, so you get some bubbles, but just enough to give you some texture, and not bloat you out like a parade balloon. The aroma is earthy and redolent and nourishing in and of itself. One sniff, and you know you’re in for a heck of a good brewski. As it warms up from ice-cold to cool, it gets a bit tangy, but never gets skunky.

These Keltek Brewery beers showed up out of the blue in our local Sainsbury’s superstore last year, and have been in stock ever since. If I could drink like I used to before I went on this anti-arthritis chemotherapy of mine, I would definitely make it part of my regular tipple rotation. But I can’t, so I won’t. Don’t let that stop anyone else from indulging in this ale, though; it’s delicious, and has the award to back it up.

Drink this if you also like: The Governor, Brakspear Triple, Pheasant Plucker, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, mellow ales, pale ales, real ales, or any other rich, toasty, high-quality microbrew.
