LEGO Cantina catastrophe: Follow-up

After asking for advice on the LEGO rip-off last week, I decided to pursue legal action. Image

I called the Jackson Twp. police and spoke to "Officer Luke" (not kidding). He knew the seller from a previous Craig's List fraud, he's a crook, and said he'd call him and demand he pay me back in the next 7 days. I was happy.

Then he called back 15 minutes later and said the seller disputes my account and said we "mutually agreed" the set was legitimate when it was purchased. So I would have to take him to court. It was no longer a criminal matter. I am now very sad.

The only reason we agreed it was legitimate was because the seller engaged in now-obvious fraud. It was presented as "factory sealed" but on close inspection tampering is evident. And he replaced the stolen bricks with a cheaper set to make it look as if it had never been opened. But the thing is - I don't know if I can prove that to a magistrate.

This afternoon I plan to call the magistrate to see what's all involved in initiating a case. It sucks because the place is an hour drive from my house, so to do this now I'm burning gas and wasting time. But I feel if I don't pursue it it's gonna haunt me.

A few years back I was ripped off by a contractor who took a deposit for a dig and then failed to show up. It was a significant deposit. I did all the right things. I went to small claims. Got a summary judgment. But still, the guy never returned the deposit. Turned out the address that was registered for the business was just some house, not his. And he just up and vanished. I paid for a writ of execution that didn't yield any results, and in the end I lost another $300 in legal fees for my efforts. So I don't have a whole lot of faith in the legal system anymore.

I have plenty of evidence he lied. But unless I get some forensic lab to dust for fingerprints or something I don't have physical evidence he's the one who swapped the pieces. I don't have any clue what the standard of proof might be for something like this...

As it stands now, I have a full set of Boba Fett's Throne Room but without instructions, and a bunch of retaped bags of who knows what. That and a general sense of self-loathing that I believed all the seller's lies, and was lulled into a false sense of security that got me suckered. is not affiliated with Lucasfilm Ltd. or any of its licensees... damn them to hell. Can't they see a golden opportunity when they see it? Buy us, you fools! You already own our souls and all our money... buy US!!! This site uses Google Analytics.
