After completing the artwork last week my next task was to drop the art into my template and get it ready for final production. It went surprisingly smoothly! Check out the first proof:

I use my first proof to work on the positioning of the art and the color saturation. My laser printer is kind of odd in that it seems to print my art super saturated, so I resort to dropping a white "mask" layer behind the black lines layer at about 30% opacity to tamp down my colors to get the desired look when printed. With my first proof the positioning worked out beautifully, and the colors were a bit more washed-out than what I wanted. A simple tweak of the opacity of the white mask and all was good!

I opted for green on the bubble area to match Klaatu's skin. It's been a long time since I've done a green one, which is a happy coincidence as I like to mix them up. I checked the position of the nameplate against the bubble and decided to extend the bubble area lower for my final piece. And I was good to go.

For the back of the card, I took a photo of a Klaatu figure to replace Uncle Gundy, as I always do. I wrote up a bio for the character and dropped it on there. And the backs were done. Easy-peasy. Finally, last night I printed out the fronts and back to be mounted.

So everything is ready to go! Normally, I would say that my run will go on sale next Wednesday, but there's one complication. As I was emptying the dishwasher over the weekend, I severely sliced open the knuckle on my right index finger. We have new knives that are razor sharp, and I didn't notice one when I was pulling stuff out of the back of the dishwasher. It doesn't hurt except when I bend it too far, and when I do that sometimes the wound opens up again and it bleeds profusely. Though that hasn't happened in a couple days now. I know my assembly process is very index-finger intensive, and I'm not sure how it'll hold up. Mostly it's pressing down with the index finger while I cut things, which should be fine. But who knows? I'll do my best, and I'll let you know Monday if they'll be on sale on 2/17 or not. Wish me luck!!
