Droids Custom Ackbar: Mostly penciled!

This past weekend was Labor Day weekend, so you know what that meant: do lots of work! Actually, I took a bit of a break after spending all of Saturday morning doing yardwork. We had our driveway and front walkway replaced in July, which resulted in the destruction of most of our lawn. A week and a half ago it finally got cool enough to plant new grass seed. That was a 12-hour endeavor, but I'm happy to report the new grass is coming up gorgeously. So this past Saturday was mostly mop-up work.

But I wasn't going to let a Monday off work go to waste, so I got cracking on the Droids Ackbar art. Using a screen grab I took from ROTJ, I started by sketching out the map room.

I gotta say I'm genuinely happy with how this part turned out! I hate drawing backgrounds (or foregrounds, in this instance). Being able to work from the existing set, and recreate it so nicely, was gratifying. My only regret is that I wish I'd positioned it half an inch further right. Still, it'll work out.

With figure drawing, sometimes you can work things out in your mind. Other times you need references. I don't have one of those wooden dolls artists use, but I do have a cell phone with a camera, which is the next best thing. I'm going to embarrass myself here and show you guys behind the curtain. Here's me modelling Madine:

Hilarious, right? I don't know why I gotta do the facial expression, but I can't help but do it. I suppose I'm method. Anyway, that photo served as the basis of my initial figure rendering:

And I hope you'll agree - that turned out quite good! With Madine roughed out, I began working on Ackbar. And for that, I took a few more photos...

Again with the facial expressions. I think I do frustrated rage fairly well. I'm not sure yet if I'm going with the second or third ones... they're pretty similar. I was hoping to finish up the Ackbar roughs Tuesday night, but then I got into a game I picked up recently (Assassin's Creed Odyssey on the PS4, which was on sale in the PS Store for $15) and my entire evening vanished. That game is seriously addicting. And the world map is absolutely massive! There's always another mission nearby, so it's impossible to put down the controller. Really fun stuff!
