Droids Custom Gonk: Progress!!

So, this past week there were some tragic developments with regards to the Droids Gonk. I was kinda bored, so I decided to clean up the 20 Gonks I'd be using for my customs. And on close inspection, I discovered 2 of them just wouldn't cut it. One has completely jacked-up paint apps, and the second the stripe sticker around the middle disintegrated when I gently brushed the figure with warm water and dish soap.

So I cut my losses, and jumped on eBay to procure a couple of replacements ($40 total). I figure I'll probably be able to get back about $5 a pop on the damaged ones, so there goes my profit margin!

But I do this for the love of it. The extra spending cash is just a nice side benefit. So no worries!

Next, I decided to repaint the feet on the Gonk droids that had badly worn feet, about 2/3 of them. It's REALLY tough to find Gonks with nice foot paint! This is the second time I recall repainting a figure for my customs. The first was to repaint a bunch of the Walrusman tusks that had been scuffed or worn. It worked out great, and other than being a slightly different hue, you can't really tell the repaints from the originals.

So I was feeling good about everything, and that's when the other shoe dropped. The five extra Gonk bubbles I got were a bit longer than the originals - about an extra 1/2" of the flat area below the bubble than the first run of 15. So I decided to trim them to match. That went fine. Then when I went to stack all the bubble together, I noticed one of my original 15 was CRACKED! And my heart sunk. I must have pressed them together while they were stacked and the top one popped. I can't get the guy to make me one replacement bubble, so my Gonk run will unfortunately now be 19 pieces. And on top of that, I could have saved $20 instead of getting two replacements off eBay if I'd noticed the crack sooner!

So I don't leave you on a sad note, I'll share the progress I've made on coloring the art. Now note that this is the very first stage of coloring - no shadows or textures or anything. Just the solid color areas I define before I get down to the real art. But still, it looks kinda cool...

It's coming along. Hopefully I'll get done with the colors in the next couple weeks. Stay tuned!
