Setting the record straight

I've heard from multiple persons online that Solo lost money due to its budget being $500 million. I have checked numerous online sources and cannot find that figure anywhere. Below are some of the figures I found, and their sources:

  • Google – at least $250 million
  • Screenrant – over $250 million
  • Variety – at least $250 million
  • Wikipedia - $275 million
  • The-Numbers.com - $250 million
  • Syfy.com - $250 million
  • Hotnewhiphop.com - $250 million
  • Observer.com – a minimum of $250 million

As you can see, none of those figures come even close to $500 million, even if you add in the proposed promotion budget of $150 million, that only brings the total to $400 million. Per Wikipedia, I show the highest production budget for a film to be $378.5 million, and that was for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides . Checking Box Office Mojo, Solohas currently made $392.9 million worldwide, so if the production budget was in the ballpark of $250 million, it didn't make what previous SW films did, but I don't consider it to be a flop either. I'm sure once the film is released on digital later this week, and on DVD and Blu-Ray later this month, the total gross for it will climb higher still. I believe the $500 million figure was just an inflated fantasy created by those who were still sore about The Last Jedi and wanted to ensure Solo would flop in the hopes of adding fuel to the fire for getting Kathleen Kennedy ousted from Lucasfilm. If anyone can prove the production budget for Solo was $500 million, I ask them to cite their source(s), otherwise what I have listed above should stand as FACT on the matter. In closing, I still believe Solo to be a great film, and I hope it exceeds all expectations once it hits the secondary market. If DVD sales of The Last Jedi can surpass the sales of Black Panther, then it is most assuredly within the realm of possibility.
