Secret Celebration project - what might have been!

So last week I revealed my Celebration Orlando 2017 Collecting Track participant gift. It turned out amazing, and was beloved by all! But it's not even close to what I originally planned to make.

I started with a different idea, and Chris G and I bounced a bunch of emails back and forth over conflicting visions of the final product. I really, REALLY wanted to stick to my original idea, so in a last-ditch effort to win Chris over, I did a mock-up of the board.

My pitch was ultimately rejected, and I started work on the board you saw last week. But I thought it might be fun to share the first board I put together. So I present: "Adventure at Jabba's Palace"

Now, first thing - the pitch game plays EXACTLY LIKE the final game, down to the dots matching the same exact events. The "You Have Died" dots match up. The "Force Push" dots match up. Even the shortcut is identical. That's because before I wrote up anything, I mapped out the gameplay. The only difference is the that the scenes are from the interior of Jabba's palace, and the artwork is more in my traditional style. Let's take a closer look at that art...

The square with Ree Yees would be pretty close to the final art. You'll see I invented sort of a generic silhouette character to play the victim in each scenario. And while I really liked these, Chris thought it was too far a departure from the "Star Tots" aesthetic.

The deaths were all quite different, and I was pretty proud of what I came up with. LOTS OF BAD PUNS! So here's how the board's events would have read:

  • A Gamorrean Guard blocks your path. Lose One Turn
  • Your thermal detonator explodes accidentally! YOU HAVE DIED!
  • Your Jedi Mind Trick makes Bib Fortuna show you the way. MOVE FORWARD 2
  • Ree Yees sees through your Skiff Guard disguise! YOU HAVE DIED!
  • You choke on a Klatooine paddy frog. YOU HAVE DIED!
  • C-3PO shows you a shortcut! On your next turn you may choose the golden path!
  • Oola’s dance has lifted your spirits! MOVE FORWARD 2
  • Salacious Crumb gouges out your eyeballs! YOU HAVE DIED!
  • Squidhead entangles you in a failed scheme! YOU HAVE DIED!
  • Amanaman decides you’d be a tasty dinner. YOU HAVE DIED!
  • Jabba opens the trap door to the Rancor! YOU HAVE DIED!

The last thing I pitched was the box layout. I wanted to mimic the old Vintage boxes, which I thought would go over like gangbusters. And I wanted to show off some Star Tots on the front like the character photos on the old 1970s game.

While this isn't how things turned out, I thought I had some great ideas in there. I can't be too disappointed... I'm really pleased with what we did do. But I always imagine what could have been.
